Goal Setting
Getting Focused for the New Year

By Cathy Mahady

It’s a New Year – That means RESOLUTIONS.

Do you make em? Many people do. Do you keep em? Most don’t.

90% of people WILL fail to achieve their New Year’s Resolutions, and most will abandon them by the end of JANUARY.

There are only a small group of people who are determined that the New Year will be different. That they WILL commit to the Plan and move toward the life they’ve been dreaming about.

And because you took the time to be on this call, I am assuming that small group includes YOU.

Many people start their Network Marketing careers by “testing” whether they will be good or not in their new business and then decide upon the “IMMEDIATE RESULTS,” which they take as PROOF that they are NOT any good. This doesn’t work, this definitely ends in failure. The correct approach is to DECIDE to succeed in your business – PERIOD. No matter how long … no matter what it takes.

That’s why I am going to ask that whatever you develop as your goal, that you don’t make changes to it for at least 90 days. You must stick with an action/task long enough to have a true assessment of it’s worth. Any perceived “failure” is just evidence that you simply need more training and more practice – that you need to give it enough time. These struggles are simply an indication of the area where you need to improve, provide some focus, and not run away from.

You must have a clear picture in your mind and have the outcome you are seeking defined on PAPER.

I have my goals posted on my desk—a visual of what I want to achieve. I state in great detail:

  • WHAT I WANT

  • WHEN I WANT IT BY

  • WHAT I NEED TO DO TO GET THERE

And don’t forget to DETERMINE WHY you want to meet this goal – what will it MEAN to you when you do? You’ll want to go back to this when you encounter a speed bump and you get slowed down or deterred from accomplishing the tasks –

Remember WHY you set the goal in the first place.

So you need first to decide “What Do I Want?”

Set aside all the reasons you fear it may not work or why you think it would be impossible considering your present circumstances.

The moment you entertain doubt or fear, all the things you want are drawn AWAY from you. If you put mental energy into images of things you don’t want, you WILL ATTRACT THOSE things.

Change your thinking and you’ll begin to see all the opportunities around you. The right people and things will NATURALLY be attracted to you. You will discover ways in your everyday life to introduce your product or your business opportunity, without being pushy or salesie ... you’ll begin to find it just becomes the perfect timing to simply share.

You must have thoughts of belief that there is a way for you to achieve, no matter what kind of obstacles may appear. Nobody has an obstacle SO GREAT that there is not also a way prepared for them to succeed, despite the challenge.

If you haven’t listened to the recording with Director Paul Hobson --- do so soon, it is on our team resource site under Recorded Training Audios. It will put your challenges into perspective.

Once you decide what you want – write the goal in great detail as if already accomplished. Your subconscious mind does not know if the goal is yet achieved. Tell your mind it HAS been.

The voice of inspiration will come only after you allow yourself to feel truly grateful, as though you already enjoy the success.

Expect your results to come – the greater the detail you use to describe the accomplishment, the more fun it is when it actually presents itself JUST as YOU ORDERED it.

Charlie Umphred, VP of Marketing, has great stories about doing this. Read his ebook, “Mind Over What Matters” -- which can be found on our team resource website under Free Downloadable eBooks.

Not only imagine what you want to achieve but also the FEELING that will go with it. Plant your goal in your mind, get emotional about it, be grateful for it and KNOW that the things you need WILL come into place – IF ... you BELIEVE, WORK the PLAN, and NEVER GIVE UP.

Do your part, work the plan, then know it’s just a matter of time, and the goal will be yours. People who KEEP AT IT, will grow in skill and self belief, until their confidence in getting what they want is unshakeable.

Visuals to use -

  • deposit slips to yourself showing the accomplishment of the goal if it is financial

  • the Power of Your Team Chart and

  • the Power of 45 Tracking Sheet if you are recruiting

  • corporate reports / charts from your back office

  • pictures / photos of what you want to achieve

Anxiety and fear always come before a major life improvement or accomplishment of a goal. Push through the fears into the life you want.

If you feel this right before you act upon something related to achieving your goal, know that it is your subconscious struggling with two contradictory truths at the same time --- The anxiety is a sign that your new image has found its way into your subconscious mind. You’ve successfully planted the accomplishment of your goal there – so ACT, perform the task in spite of the fear. That’s what moves you forward.

Sometimes we get paralyzed into inactivity because we don’t know HOW the goal will be accomplished – that’s ok! Just set the DESIRE or INTENTION, do the tasks that will move you toward the goal, and then LET GO.

Many times the end of the month is approaching and I haven’t YET met my recruiting goal --- but what matters is that I HAVE the goal, WORKED all month TOWARD the goal, and then it never fails that I will be blessed with new partners at the LAST moment. I didn’t know where they would come from or who they would be or when they would arrive – but I BELIEVED they would.

Jackie Ulmer, our upline, has said that this industry is a voluntary army – you can NOT force someone to join, you can NOT force them to buy your product. You are relying on the actions of other people to complete your goals.

So how do you achieve your goals when so much of it is not up to YOU?

You SET INTENTIONS. This is more about taking responsibility and control for the TASKS that YOU can and will COMPLETE. It’s hard to set a goal that you will sponsor 5 people a month or schedule one fundraiser every month – again cause you can’t control who is going to fulfill the other end of the deal.

But you can COMMIT to DOING a DAILY ACTION – contact 5 people a day about the fundraising program or give scent samples to 35 people a week for example. You LET GO of the OUTCOME and give yourself credit for having COMPLETED the tasks.

If you are new to goal setting or new to the business, be sure to set realistic and obtainable goals. Then as you start to see the success, take bigger risks, stretch yourself a bit, set bigger intentions.

Ok --- so how do you actually write a GOAL.

According to Tim Sales, goal setting is broken down into four sections.

  1. The Goal

  2. The Plan

  3. Projects

  4. Schedule and Do the Tasks

Work it backwards – doing the TASKS gets the PROJECTS done, which accomplishes the PLAN, which completes the GOAL.

1. THE GOAL

Goals are a decision to BE Something, DO something, or GET something. This is very broad or general – not about how many of what you are going to do.

Write out what it is you WANT. No restrictions on the GOAL, be creative and don’t predetermine the obstacles / challenges you fear you will encounter.

Will it be

  • ---- things you want to get

  • ---- something you want to learn

  • ---- a group you want to help

Tim Sales gives the example of “I want to make $10,000 a month” as the stated GOAL. That’s ALL you write in that column --- what is it you want?

2. THE PLAN

Next determine the PLAN that will ACHIEVE the GOAL. Again it is general and not too detailed. But will consist of several parts.

For our example goal, we would PLAN to:

  • Invite prospects

  • Present our opportunity

  • Train our partners.

3. THE PROJECTS

PROJECTS consist of further breaking down the PLAN into steps to take.

When you completed the last step of the last project, you should be in possession of what you wanted to achieve. For our example, Project 1 would include the following steps of the PLAN to Invite prospects.

  • 1a – make a list of 100 people you know from your warm market

  • 1b – run ads or buy leads of people who are looking for a home business

  • 1c – decide what to say to create interest, test, revise until you feel comfortable, and repeat

4. SCHEDULE AND DO THE TASKS

The main element of success is SCHEDULING the tasks into your CALENDAR.

(Next week's training will cover some tools that will assist in keeping you organized enough to follow through with the tasks).

If it is in black and white, I am MUCH more inclined to do it, even if fear presents itself or I’d rather just push it off to another day. I am a list checker offer – I get the satisfaction of marking off the task as DONE! This motivates me to follow through even when I don’t feel like it.

The process does take DISCIPLINE – which only means making the DECISION and CONTINUING to make the decision to COMPLETE THE TASKS again and again. At any point that you get off track, you can make the decision to do it the next day.

If you are getting stuck and not moving forward and feel it’s not working – don’t fall into saying the business doesn’t work. When you start to withdraw from your goal – this usually means that you bumped up against something too big to accomplish alone.

  • So acknowledge that you’re stuck. Recognize that you are backing away from your goal.

  • Get with your sponsor and ask for help in working through it.

  • Together break it into even smaller tasks – something more manageable, more obtainable.

Write down new tasks that you REALLY WILL do, no matter what, even if being discouraged by others or circumstances.

This will help you build discipline and help you to trust yourself that you will do what you say you will. Accomplishing these easier, smaller tasks will give you confidence that you will be able to achieve your goal. Tim Sales says, “To believe in yourself could be the greatest goal you could achieve.”

It’s a New Year – forget the past, set your goals, work the plan, complete the tasks, and see success abound in 2006!

I love this saying from Leslie Householder, “When you have a choice, choose to believe.”
